Why watch face stress data isn't real-time

Two things to know up front.

Apple Watch faces don't refresh in real time

Aside from the time itself, none of Apple's watch face complications update in real time. Delays of a few minutes up to half an hour are normal.

Apps don't control refresh frequency

MoodyWatch can submit fresh data, but when the watch face actually updates is scheduled by watchOS. On a busier device, updates can be slower.

What counts as abnormal

Worth digging deeper if:

  • Data in the app is already updated, but the watch face hasn't refreshed for several hours
  • You have to manually open the app before the watch face updates
  • Along with the stale face, you're also not getting stress notifications

Things to check first

1. Health permissions are complete

On iPhone: Settings β†’ Privacy & Security β†’ Health β†’ MoodyWatch β†’ enable all categories.

On Apple Watch: Settings β†’ Health β†’ Data Sources β†’ confirm MoodyWatch is enabled.

2. Notifications are on

In the Watch app on iPhone β†’ Notifications, make sure MoodyWatch notifications are enabled.

In Apple Watch β†’ Settings β†’ General β†’ Background App Refresh:

  • Confirm the main "Background App Refresh" switch is on
  • Confirm MoodyWatch's individual switch is also on

3. Background App Refresh is on

On Apple Watch, go to Settings β†’ General β†’ Background App Refresh and confirm:

  • The top-level Background App Refresh switch is on
  • MoodyWatch's background refresh is on

Apple officially says this doesn't affect watch face refresh, but in practice turning it off often leads to noticeable delays.

4. Restart the devices

On some watchOS versions, watch face refresh issues happen more often. Try restarting Apple Watch, and if needed, iPhone as well.

If none of that helped

If you've already tried:

  • Rechecking and granting health permissions
  • Enabling notifications
  • Enabling background app refresh
  • Restarting the devices
  • Reinstalling the app

Please send the following to moodywatch@stressrobot.com or reach us through WeCom support:

  • Screenshot of iOS β†’ Settings β†’ MoodyWatch
  • Screenshot of Apple Watch β†’ Settings β†’ General β†’ Background App Refresh
  • Device models and OS versions (e.g. iPhone 15 + iOS 17.1 + Apple Watch S9 + watchOS 10.1)

We'll use these to investigate further and help you locate the problem faster.

When the face doesn't change right away, the instinct is "is it broken?" But in Apple Watch's model, the face isn't a live view β€” it's a summary updated by the system on its own schedule. A small delay usually isn't a product issue, and it doesn't mean your data has stopped working. As long as in-app data is current, notifications work, and the face refreshes within a reasonable window, you're fine.
