By default, Apple Watch does not sample HRV continuously. Typically, the system samples HRV every 2–5 hours and records heart rate about once per minute.
So if HRV doesn't update right away, that's often completely normal.
Situations where no HRV data is produced
- Low Power Mode is on
- A workout is being recorded
- You're moving fast (running, cycling, in a vehicle, etc.)
- The watch is locked or not worn snugly
- System version is too old (watchOS 7 or earlier)
How to check
1. First, check whether heart rate is updating
In iPhone Health → Browse → Heart → Heart Rate:
- If heart rate is updating every minute, sampling is fine and HRV should show up within 2–5 hours.
- If heart rate hasn't updated for a long time, open the Heart Rate app on Apple Watch and see if it can measure:
- Heart rate detected → likely a sync issue between watch and phone; try re-pairing.
- Heart rate not detected → possible sensor or hardware issue; contact Apple Support.
2. Try a Mindfulness session on Apple Watch
This is a fairly direct diagnostic. On Apple Watch, open the Mindfulness app and do a breathing/mindfulness session for about a minute. In many cases the system will log an HRV reading during or after the session.
Then go to iPhone Health → Browse → Heart → Heart Rate Variability to see if a new HRV entry appeared.
If a new HRV entry shows up after the session, it usually means:
- The watch sensor is working
- HRV sampling is working
- The issue is probably just low automatic sampling frequency, not a malfunction
If nothing appears even after a session, combine that with whether heart rate is updating to narrow things down.
Why real-time stress isn't updating
MoodyWatch's real-time stress score is calculated from heart rate + HRV, and normally updates about every 6 minutes.
Things that can pause real-time stress:
- Frequent movement detected (walking, wrist shaking) — this data is discarded on purpose, and the chart often shows a "frequent movement" marker
- Anomalous heart rate readings
- Low Power Mode is on
- A workout is being recorded
- You're moving fast (running, cycling, in a vehicle, etc.)
- The watch is locked or not worn snugly
- System version is too old (watchOS 7 or earlier)
Start by checking whether heart rate is updating in iPhone Health → Browse → Heart → Heart Rate. If heart rate itself isn't updating, real-time stress can't be computed either.
Quick recap
- HRV is sampled automatically by the system, usually every 2–5 hours
- Real-time stress depends on heart rate + HRV and normally updates about every 6 minutes
- The Mindfulness app can help verify that HRV sampling works
- Sampling frequency is decided by the system and cannot be shortened manually
- Short delays are normal
If nothing updates for a long time, check in this order: heart rate updates, Mindfulness result, how you're wearing the watch, Low Power Mode, workout state, system version.
